ESSENTIAL WINTER MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR TRUCK DRIVERS

Kenworth is here to keep you safe and keep you going. That’s why we’ve built a strong network of hundreds of authorized dealerships throughout North America, ready to support you wherever you go this winter. These practical solutions from Kenworth Parts & Service will help you to winterize your fleet :

GENERAL WINTERIZATION MAINTENANCE:

1. Batteries : Batteries can lose up to 35% of their power in freezing temps. Inspect your batteries for signs of corrosion, leakage, or damage.

2. Block Heaters : In cold climates, diesel won’t be frozen solid, but it will not be in liquid form. Use block heaters if you plan to park your vehicles in extremely cold weather.

3. Insulated Tote Blankets : Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) begins crystalizing at 12°F (−11°C). To help prevent freezing, consider using an insulated tote blanket.

4. Tire Chains : Inspect tire chains before winter.

5. Winter Grille Covers : Winterizing your front grilles makes start-ups easy, keeps the engine warm and helps prevent diesel fuel from gelling.

6. Windshield Wipers : Replace wipers regularly to clear snow and aid visibility.

7.  Winter Windshield Wiper Fluid : Top off your windshield wiper fluid and keep extra on-hand for when needed.

8. Fuel Filters : Inspect and replace fuel filters. Contaminated filters clog and trap fuel which can put a vehicle out of service.

9. Extra Bulbs : Make sure all electrical systems are fully operational.

10. Fuel Caps : A secure fuel cap prevents loss of fuel pressure and prevents debris from entering fuel tanks.

To make sure your vital truck systems are ready for the winter months, check these four main categories:

1. COOLING SYSTEM READINESS

  • Fan Shroud, Assembly & Idler Pulley condition
  • Engine Block Heater continuity test
  • Radiator condition, mounting, hoses, connections and leaks
  • Surge Tank
  • Water Pump condition and leaks
  • Coolant pressure, type, protection, level, contamination and freeze point
  • Check SCA to manufacturers' charging specs

3. AIR SYSTEMS

  • Air Tanks water drainage
  • Air Dryer cartridge service intervals
  • Air Compressor, Pulley, and Mounting Brackets

2. CAB HEATING SYSTEM

  • Heater Screens cleanliness and condition
  • Heater Controls & Fan operation
  • Bunk Heater Controls & Fan operation
  • Cab Floor Grommets & Door Weather-Stripping

4. FINAL CHECKPOINTS

  • Visual inspection of Starter and Connections
  • Alternator drive belt & Mounting brackets
  • Steering Gear and Reservoir leaks
  • Vibration Damper condition
  • Hood Grill & Bug Screens
  • Hood Brackets secured

When adding a winter grille cover, remember there still needs to be proper air flow to your engine. When parked, make sure the nose of your vehicle is away from the wind. Check your winter grille cover to make sure it is secure, so it does not blow around.
