HOW CAN I PREPARE MY TRUCK FOR WINTER?
Winter driving can be extremely challenging because of hazards like snow and ice on the road. We've broken our winterization service checklist into four main categories: Cooling System, Cab Heating System, Air System and Related Items. Make sure your truck is winter-ready for the months ahead.
IS MY TRUCK'S COOLING SYSTEM READY FOR WINTER?
Make sure your cooling system is ready for winter by going through this winterization service checklist. For each item, check to see if it's in good condition or in need of repair:
- Fan Shroud
- Fan Assembly & Idler Pulley
- Engine Block Heater (continuity test)
- Radiator (check exterior condition)
- Radiator Mounting
- Radiator (check for visible leaks)
- Hose Condition & Connections
- Surge Tank
- Water Pump (check for visible leaks)
- Coolant Level
- Coolant (take sample)
- Coolant (check for signs of oil and/or debris)
- Coolant (check freeze point - use refractometer)
- If your coolant freeze point is between -25°F to -50°F then it is good
- If your coolant freeze point is above -25°F or below -50°F then it needs to be replaced
- Make note of your coolant protection (freeze point) ______°F
- Coolant (check corrosion protection)
- Conventional Coolant
- Be sure to mark if your coolant color is green, pink or purple, brown, other
- Check SCA to manufacturers specifications
- Is it OK, undercharged, or overcharged?
- Extended Life Coolant
- Check corrosion protection with ELC test kit. Does it have adequate protection or does it lack protection?
- Pressure Test Cooling System (check for leaks)

- Heater Screens (clean & clear of obstructions)

- Air Tanks (drain water)

- Air Compressor, Pulley, and Mounting Brackets
- Visual inspection of Starter and Connections
- Alternator (drive belt, mounting brackets)
- Steering Gear and Reservoir (check for leaks)
- Surge Tank
- Vibration Damper condition
- Hood Grill and Bug Screens
- Hood Brackets
